We're Hiring: Healthcare Initiative Leader

The Center for Faith and Learning (CFL) at Anselm House seeks to hire a full-time leader for the Anselm House Healthcare Initiative, with a particular focus on engaging the field of healthcare through the framework of Christian theology and ethics. This position will work closely with the Director of the Center for Faith and Learning and other CFL and programs staff to lead and develop programs aimed at advancing Anselm House’s mission of connecting Christian faith with academic life of the University of Minnesota, especially among faculty, graduate and professional students, and academic and research staff in the field of healthcare.

The successful candidate will have responsibility for developing and directing the CFL Initiative in Healthcare (as a proof of concept), with an eye towards supporting a future expansion of initiatives into other academic areas. The Healthcare Initiative at Anselm House is an ambitious undertaking to leverage the strong community of Christian faculty and students, along with the Twin Cities professional community in this field for sustained exploration of key questions and avenues of inquiry. In this sustained engagement we aim to present the Christian intellectual tradition as a source of an integrated view of reality and human flourishing.

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with academic training, interests, and abilities who desires the creative freedom to develop new models and programs for pursuing interdisciplinary questions in relation to the Christian faith at a major research university. The ideal candidate has an advanced degree in (applied) Christian theology, ethics or a closely related field (PhD or terminal degree preferred), with proven competency in medical/healthcare ethics. Knowledge of and experience in other fields of applied ethics is desired.

The job’s primary responsibilities include the following:

  • Cultivate relationships, and develop and convene a network of UMN students, faculty, and staff, as well as local professionals, at the intersection of Christian faith and healthcare.
  • Develop and oversee a regular schedule of events focused on the health sciences (i.e., socials, lectures, forums, workshops, conferences, symposia, retreats, reading groups, etc.) that reach a wide cross-section of faculty/staff, residents, graduate/professional students, and possibly advanced undergraduates.
  • Cultivate Anselm House’s academic partnerships with schools, departments, and centers within UMN; with external institutions and organizations; and with local Christian student groups (CMDA, CMA, etc.)
  • Facilitate and support the production of scholarship among UMN faculty and graduate students (e.g., articles, conference proceedings, etc.) related to key initiative themes.
  • Develop a regular schedule of co-curricular courses, ideally taught by, or co-taught with a UMN faculty member, that complements UMN course offerings
  • Work with the Director of the CFL and other CFL and Anselm House staff to set the strategic vision for expanding disciplinary initiatives in other academic disciplines to advance Anselm House’s engagement with the academic life of the University of Minnesota
  • Assist CFL staff with general program administration

Requirements

Success in this position requires expertise in navigating the many different academic contexts present within a public university. The successful applicant will possess the following qualities:

  • Enthusiasm for the Anselm House mission of connecting faith and knowledge with all of life
  • Experience in secular university/professional contexts
  • Expertise in connecting, inspiring, encouraging, and enabling others towards a common end––this position is partly one of rallying, supporting, and “leading from behind” in order to bring out the best in others
  • Ability to listen well and translate ideas among a wide range of people within the university, crossing disciplinary boundaries and religious/ideological perspectives
  • Excellent communication (written, verbal, public speaking) and networking skills
  • Ability to plan and coordinate academic programs and events (lectures, workshops, conferences, etc.), with a high attention to detail and ability to manage multiple collaborative projects simultaneously
  • Ability to think creatively about pursuing the university’s academic mission in relationship to the Christian faith
