Convivia are casual social gatherings at the end of the workday for hors d’oeuvres, drinks, fellowship, and a short talk from a colleague or visiting scholar. The purpose of each Convivium is to convene the University’s Christian scholarly community and showcase one or more Christian scholars pursuing the goal of integrating their Christian faith deeply with their academic work.
For each Convivium we ask a speaker to share some wisdom geared toward an audience of fellow scholars, followed by a Q&A. While we don’t limit the speakers in terms of topics, we do ask them to share a bit about their research and the “state of their field,” but also to structure their talk in such a way that it inspires (and perhaps challenges) other faculty in the room to start “thinking Christianly” about their discipline and vocation. Ultimately, we hope that a regular exposure to these ideas and experiences of fellow faculty will contribute to the growth and maturing of faith-infused dialogue within the Christian community at the UMN and beyond.
