As part of our commitment to academic excellence, we host three annual lecture series, the Holmer Lecture in Christianity and the Humanities, the Anderson Lecture in Science and Religion, and the Johansson Lecture in Global Christian Thought complemented by various other lectures and seminars. These annual lecture series are an opportunity to demonstrate Christian scholarship at the very highest levels of excellence in the context of a public and secular university context.
Since 1996 Anselm House has hosted the annual Holmer Lecture in Christianity and the Humanities, inviting world-class scholars to the University of Minnesota to discuss work relating to the intersection of Christianity and various fields of study. The Holmer lecture in the Humanities and Liberal Arts is named after Paul L. Holmer (1916–2004) who served on the faculty at the University of Minnesota from 1946–1960, after which he took an appointment at Yale Divinity School as the Noah Porter Professor of Philosophical Theology until his retirement in 1986.
Since 2014 Anselm House has hosted the annual V. Elving Anderson Lecture in Science and Religion, inviting world-class scholars to the University of Minnesota to discuss work relating to the intersection of Christianity and science. The V. Elving Anderson Lecture in Science & Religion is named after V. Elving Anderson (1921–2014) who served from 1961-1991 on the faculty at the University of Minnesota. A deeply committed Christian, he spent most of his career working to promote dialogue concerning the intersections between science and religion.
Our inaugural Johansson Lecture in Global Christian Thought was delivered by Dr. Amos Yong of Fuller Theological Seminary in December of 2024. The Johansson Lecture is named in honor of Rev. Carl Johansson, who faithfully served Trinity Lutheran Church of Minnehaha Falls for ten years.
