River House Manager (Part-Time, Live-In)

Anselm House is seeking a part-time, live-in Residential House Manager for River House, a Christian residential community of 10–12 undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities).

The House Manager provides relational leadership, mentorship, and household oversight, helping cultivate a healthy, Christ-centered university student community. The House Manager works closely with the Director of Residential and Community Life and other residential leaders (if present) to support residents in developing Christian character and vocation during their time as UMN students. This role is ideal for someone who loves community life, enjoys walking alongside students, and is excited to contribute to Christian formation in a university context.

This position requires approximately a 12-month commitment (typically August–July) and averages 10–20 hours per week.

Who We Are

Anselm House is a center for Christian studies with a mission to help students and faculty at the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities) connect Christian faith & knowledge with all of life. For over 40 years, Anselm House has sought to wholeheartedly serve the University of Minnesota from the center of campus. From the very beginning we’ve endeavored to help the campus community—from freshmen to faculty—make meaningful connections. Our story is one of gathering, educating, and sending out whole leaders for the whole of life.

Our Namesake

St. Anselm of Canterbury was an 11th century theologian and philosopher. He is remembered, among other things, for the concept of “faith seeking understanding.” He believed that our faith and our knowledge of the world are intertwined. His life of thoughtful faithfulness and engagement with learning provides a model for our presence at the university.

Our Values

Hospitality: We open our lives (and living rooms) to the University of Minnesota community, honoring the heart-soul-mind-strength complex that is every human person.

Character: We cultivate practices that order our lives to the true, good, and beautiful, believing that following Jesus requires careful attention to his way of being human.

Faith: We honor the breadth and depth of the Christian tradition, centered in the self-disclosure and self-giving of the Triune God in the person of Jesus Christ.

Knowledge: We support the University of Minnesota’s disciplined pursuit of knowledge, holding that a personal apprehension of reality is a guide to truth.

About Our Residential Programs

Anselm House’s residential programs provide opportunities for students to live communally, learn from each other, and practice hospitality and leadership as a Christian community on the UMN campus.

River House is our main residential community since 2022, housing 8-12 student fellows (both grad and undergrad students, on men’s and women’s floors) in a four-story house located in Stadium Village neighborhood on East Bank UMN campus. All River House residents are student fellows in our Fellows Program

In addition to regular participation in the Fellows Program, life at River House includes these regular practices and commitments:

  • A weekly meal and discussion as a household.
  • Weekly household prayer.
  • Weekly household chores.
  • Monthly connection with a mentor in the Anselm House community.
  • Semesterly household retreats in fall (before Labor Day) and spring (late January).
  • Regular participation and membership in a local church body.
  • Regular personal practices of prayer, stewardship, and care for the community (as described in our household covenant).

The House Manager(s) of River House provide relational and spiritual leadership for many students. Every year, House Managers have a significant opportunity to set and influence the culture of the River House community and help steward it into a welcoming, thoughtful, growth-oriented invitation for Christian students.

  • Oversee and maintain regular contact with student residents in leadership roles, if they exist (e.g., floor managers, social chairs), offering guidance and support as they carry out their responsibilities.

Coordination with Anselm House Staff and Programs

  • Communicate regularly (in regular meetings and as needed) with the Director of Residential and Community Life regarding the health of the household and any emerging challenges.
  • Participate in the Anselm House Fellows Program (biweekly dinners and discussions, plus fall and spring retreats), either as a participant or in a support staff role (a commitment of ~3 hours every two weeks, on a Monday or Tuesday evening).
  • Property and Household Oversight: Ensure residents care for the physical residence and fulfill tenant responsibilities (e.g., cleaning, snow removal, lawn care, light bulb replacement). Communicate non-tenant maintenance or repair needs to Anselm House Property Management.

Note: Responsibilities may be shared or divided between two House Managers serving the same household (ideally one men’s floor manager and one women’s floor manager).
